ShopSpotlight: Top-rated Amazon Finds, Reviewed

They’re highly rated, some with more than 20,000 reviews. And, they all average to more than 4 stars. So how do these superstars translate? Let’s find out. Today I’m going to try some of the highest-rated items on Amazon.

Sojos Retro sunglasses, $15

These have more than 6,000 reviews, with an average rating of 4.5 stars. They come in a variety of shades. But most importantly? They have UVA protection. As someone who loses, breaks, or scratches glasses quite easily, these are a perfect (read: affordable) solution. They come in a variety of shades and are super flattering. Final review: Keep! They’re perfect for the price tag. 5 stars.

PrettyGarden Women’s elastic jumper, $21- 31

I came across this in an article as the romper flight attendants swear by. Not sure why that resonated with me, but of course, I had to try it out. (Marketing, am I right?) This romper has more than 24,000 reviews, with an average rating of 4.5 stars. It’s made of 65% spandex and 35% polyester, so you can imagine it has a little give to it. The style is form-fitting, and just slightly off IMO. Final review: Not bad, but pay attention to sizing and consider sizing up. 3.5 stars.

The Gym People thick high waist yoga pants, $25

On the quest for the perfect leggings, I turned to Amazon and found these at the top of the list. With more than 18,000 reviews and an average 4.5-star rating, they looked promising. Upon opening, I immediately noticed the fabric, as promised, is extremely thick. They’re not super soft, but soft enough. The waist is pretty tight, maybe even too tight for me. But here’s the ultimate dealbreaker: they are not squat-proof. Final review: Returned. Thick as promised, and the fabric is not bad. But, they are not squat-proof. 2.5 stars.

Colorfulkoala Women’s high waisted yoga pant, $25

Dubbed Lululemon dupes, these leggings have an average of 4.5 stars with over 30,000 ratings. The fabric itself seemed more promising than the other pair upon opening the package. The color is gorgeous, and the fabric seems softer. They’re not as tight on the waist, and pretty comfortable. Final review: These aren’t bad. But, no, I would not call them Lululemon dupes. They aren’t nearly as soft and comfortable. The pockets are also on the slightly smaller side. 3.5 stars.

Vote Pretty Women’s summer floral sundress, $21-29

This one only has 2,600 ratings, but I absolutely loved the design. It averages 4.5 stars. I bought this in Navy blue. First impression? The fabric is soft, and had no tears or fraying like some reviews. It is deceiving in that it does require using a piece of fabric to create the bow. That, however, doesn’t bother me. Additionally, I am smaller chested, so the fit works for me. I can see how this would not work for those blessed with larger assets. Final review: This is a keeper. It’s long enough that I won’t feel too exposed while being subtly sexy. 4 stars.

BTFBM Women casual crew sleeveless dress, $29

This dress has more than 13,000 ratings and an average of 4 stars. I was skeptical on this one. A lot of the reviews said it ran small. And, being a fitted dress with seemingly t-shirt-like material, I wondered if it would be, ahem, well covered. The reality is, the medium fit more than fine. It wasn’t too tight or small. It can be dressed up or down. Final review: I want this one to be a keeper, but it’s a little too short for my liking. But, it’s something that can transition from day to night easily, and be relatively comfortable. 3.5 stars.

Bottom Line

Just like any other product, on any other site, reviews are a great temperature read to get an idea of what to expect. But, at the end of the day, just because it works for others does not mean it is going to work for you. Of the 7 highly rated products, I ended up returning 2 which means that by going on ratings alone, is a 71% success rate.
