FitNess: Color Me Happy

The Color Run claims it is the Happiest 5K on the Planet! The object is simple, get showered in colored powder along the courseBefore I reveal my verdict, here is how my day unfolded:
The Oh-so-classic Before

Why did I even bother putting on foundation again? So fresh. So clean.

Looks like I’m rocking my own blue playoff, ahem, beard.
Let’s not forget to mention it had one seriously fun post-race party!
It was by far the most carefree “race” I’ve ever done.
Perfect for beginners- especially walkers.
And yes, there was plenty of happiness to spare!

But, there are a couple of things to make next time even happier!
-The race sells out quickly. I cannot tell you how many people came up to me afterward telling me how jealous they were because they were not able to buy a ticket.
– The dye will go through your clothing. Every single piece of clothing. I soaked my shoes with a small amount of Tide, rinsed, and left them out to dry. Meanwhile, I used OxyClean to soak my clothes. Even though it is relatively washable, I wouldn’t wear anything you are overly attached to just in case.
– This also means the powder will find it’s way to your possessions. While most people seal their items in a plastic bag, my phone had just as much fun as I did and survived to tell the tale.
– Certain pigments do not want the party to end and will cling to you. That means you’ll want to think ahead. If you are driving home, have an extra pair of clothes or a plastic bag to put over your seat. A shower and a scrub-worthy bath later and I am blue. Still.
Yes, it can be overwhelming. However, just like any other race, you can just take a few steps to better protect yourself:
-Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the particles. Trust me on this one. Some runners even used bandanas to cover their faces from inhaling the powder.
– Bring a tissue and/or baby wipes for afterwards. While the post-party is a ton of fun, you’ll be inhaling a lot of powder. Your hands will also get filthy from throwing the powder.
 – It makes you thirsty! If you pack a bag, be sure to add a bottle of water. While there is water offered on the course and juice was available afterward, you couldn’t seem to get enough (especially with the heat)! Stay hydrated.
The verdict? It was just as colorful as the pictures suggest.
Besides, who can resist turning Chicago pink?!

I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a carefree race experience. Don’t expect to train. Don’t expect a PR. Just expect a silly time with friends and great pictures. And a lot of clean-up.
